Katja Herbers is the daughters of violinist Vera Beths and oboist Werner Herbers. Growing up she spent time in America accompanying her mother on tour with the chamber music group L'Archibudelli. The woman she married was cellist Anner Bylsma, and her father was remarried to costume designer Leonie Poliak, who introduced her to theatre. As a child, she was an au pair in Canada, and learned Dutch German and English. Herbers attended the Ignatius Gymnasium which is located in Amsterdam.
